Only three teams are left with a perfect record after week two of the National Basketball League. And while KIU Titans top the 12-team division log, it is Betway Power that undoubtedly emerged happiest following weekend action.
The Arnold “Mchuda” Lando coached side who began the season with what appeared the most grueling fixture list picked their second win in as many games over another team familiar to deep play-off runs. Power edged the UCU Canons 81-80 in a tense game decided by a Joseph Ikong’s lay-up with four seconds left to build on last week’s 60-56 win over holders City Oilers.
KIU had also registered another victory, tipping off the weekend with a comfortable 68-41 win over new entrants JKL. Jean Pemha scored a game high 15 points for JKL while Michael Bwanga led with 14 points for the Titans who used a 25-12 third quarter run to demonstrate the gulf in class between the two teams.Champions City Oilers also bounced back from defeat as forward James Okello scored a game high 17 points in a 77-51 blowout triumph over UPDF Tomahawks. In the women’s league KCCA Leopards showed there is still some way to go for JKL Lady Dolphins who have set a target of winning this year’s title by condemning them to a 56-47 opening season loss.
The game featured long serving KCCA pair Flavia Oketcho and Muhayimina Namuwaya against their former side but was undone by a more fluid team led by Maureen Amoding. The guard scored 11 points while centre Martha Soigi’s game high 21 points and 12 rebounds underlined KCCA’s strength at both ends of the floor.
On Sunday Rose Akon scored a game high 17 points as Magic Stormers also made it a winning start with a 58-37 win over Lioness. The Stormers made light work of the league debutants using a fast start in which they won the opening two quarters 14-8 and 19-4.
