Betway Kobs win Rugby League title

Betway Kobs 15-5 Pirates

Betway Kobs are the 2021 Nile Stout Rugby League champions.

The title was sealed in epic style on Saturday as the Kobs defeated second-placed Black Pirates 15-5 in the last game of the season.

Having gone into the last game of the season in search of a single point to land the title, Kobs went for victory and were the better side on a rainy rugby day.

Alhaji Manano opened the scoring with a kick and chase touch down which was well converted by James Ijongat.

Haruna Muhammad crossed the chalk for Pirates but Ijongat added a penalty for the Blue Army to take a 10-5 lead into the halftime break.

It was all about game management in the second half and Davis Kyewalabye's charges played in Pirates' half for the better part of the half.

Sustained pressure resulted in a Derrick Tukwasibwe try after the Kobs scrum bullied Pirates over the try line for the back-rower to touch down.

The full-time whistle sent the men in blue into wild celebrations. The Betway-sponsored side had landed a first league title in five years.

"It's been a long season. We have come a long way. We have finally won," Kobs captain Brian Asaba said after the whistle.

Head coach Kyewalabye was happy with his troops and how they showed up for every game like it was a final.

Nine games played, nine wins, and only two tries conceded. Kobs were ruthless throughout the season.

Only Heathens' Gerald Ssewankambo and Haruna Muhammad managed to breach their defence.

As a token of appreciation, Kobs received a cheque of UGX. 10 Million from Betway.

The cheque was handed over by Betway Uganda Country Manager Adellah Agaba Nyaruhuma.

The trophy was handed to the captain by Prince Daudi Kintu Wasajja of Buganda Kingdom.
