Betway Kobs out to clinch Uganda Cup

Betway Kobs are back to the Uganda Cup final having missed out in the last two seasons.

When they take on holders Black Pirates Saturday afternoon at Legends, the men in blue will be looking to roll back the years and return the glory days back to the club.

Having lost 13-10 to rivals Hima Cement Heathens in the 2015 final, Kobs failed to negotiate the semi-final hurdle the next two seasons.

Their 10-8 win over Heathens in the semis was however enough to edge closer to silverware.  Tries from back returnee Ronald Musajjagulanyago and team captain Brian Asaba are all Kobs needed to get over Heathens.

Head coach Fred Mudoola will be hoping for much better execution from a side that should have killed the semi-final clash in the first half but was let down by their lacklustre display in the final third.

“We played well but maybe we should have scored more. We have worked on that in training and should be much better in the final," halfback Ivan Kirabo said ahead of the game. Attention will be on the kind of lineup Mudoola will field in the final.

Several players were deployed out of their natural positions in the semi-final with Kirabo shifting from scrumhalf to fly half, Joseph Aredo played in the midfield alongside Ian Munyani who was deployed at inside center although he's more comfortable as an outside center.

James Ijongat was also deployed out wide on the wing and not his usual fly half position. The arrival of Robert Aziku and Musajjagulanyago has improved Kobs' scrummaging and will be key in the final.

Aziku gives the Legends outfit the presence in the set pieces while Musajja carries the ball to push the team forward.

For Pirates, who will be making a third straight appearance in the Uganda Cup final, defending everything they won last season starts Saturday.

Bobby Musinguzi's charges had to dig deep to get to the final after edging Toyota Buffaloes 23-9.
