Betway Kobs obliterate Rhinos to start business

Betway Kobs were the only team to collect maximum points on the first weekend of rugby action in Uganda.

A commanding 51-00 victory at Kings Park means that the Blue Army are in an early lead in the title race.

Pius Ogena was unplayable and scored four of the team's nine tries as Kobs stamped their authority on the game.

A hattrick from Ogena and one conversion from flyhalf James Ijongat gave Kobs a 17-00 lead at the halftime break.

After the restart, Kobs continued to pile more pressure on the hapless Rhinos and it wasn't long before debutant James Odong got in on the act.

He crossed the white line for his first try in blue.

Another debutant, Brian Ochan, who started at scrumhalf also touched down to mark his arrival from Pirates.

Karim Arinaitwe, Brian Asaba and Daudi Ssemwami added a try each while James Ijongat added extras to seal a deserved win.

Former Kobs player Ivan Kirabo got the best opportunity for Rhinos to put points on board but his penalty attempt was unsuccessful.

With the bonus-point win, Kobs are now on 5 points and set the pace in the title race.

Defending champions Heathens held on to defeat Pirates 24-19 at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.

A late surge from the Sea Robbers had the hosts in a spot of bother but they held on for victory while Pirates settled for a losing bonus.

The games will keep coming for Davis Kyewalabye's charges and next on the card is a clash with Warriors this Saturday.

The League is being played under a single round-robin format with teams meeting in a one-off clash.
