It is six months since sport in Uganda was shut down because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Unlike other sectors sport is yet to return after its closure by government in March.
It is for that reason that Betway Kobs assistant coach Davis Kiwalabye wants the Uganda Rugby Union to cancel the remainder of the league season.
“Five months is a long time off,” Kiwalabye said of his Betway sponsored side that was second on the ten-team log with 58 points, five behind rivals Heathens before the lockdown.
“I think if the league resumed today only 10% of the players would be able to have the mental and physical strength to compete,”
“The game is very physical and takes a lot of strength, mental and physical to rebuild a competitive side,” he added.
We would require an off-season because of the time lag the bodies have shut down. Our players are mentally not stable. You can see the times they are going through.”
“The club has been able to support them where it can both physically and mentally but in the aspect of the game we would need about 8-12 weeks of pre-season, to condition and build a strong player,” added Kiwalabye in a radio interview on Sanyu FM.
Kiwalabye’s stance however defers from that of the mother body the Uganda Rugby Union who seem intent on seeing out the final fixtures of the season.
“Of course, we had seen what had happened to the Uganda Premier League, where the champions were declared with five games left to play.”
“That, ordinarily puts you under pressure to take action. But there are indications now, that sport will be re-opened in the near future, albeit behind closed doors,” Oscar Olaro, the URU head of technical told The Observer in an interview.
