Betway Kobs beat Rhinos to keep pressure at the top

Veterans Timothy Mudoola and Allan Musoke combined well to give Betway Kobs a much needed bonus point win at Legends Rugby Grounds last Saturday. Mudoola and his charges had to brave the Saturday downpour and played the entire first half on a water-logged pitch.

With the circulation of the ball hampered by the wet conditions, the two teams opted to play safe with short passes and kicking for points whenever the opportunity was presented.

Rhinos were the first to put points on the board with Sula Ngobi dissecting the posts from a penalty early in the game. Kobs kept pushing for a try but Rhinos and the water kept them at bay.

Adrian Kasito and Joseph Aredo combined to set up Justin Kimono who touched down in the corner for Kobs' first points on the day. Kasito couldn't add the extras as his conversion was short.

The men in blue kept probing and Rhinos were forced into making mistakes. Kasito was called up for a penalty after Rhinos were penalised and he made no mistake to give Kobs an 8-3 lead going into half time.

With Heathens failing to get a bonus points at Warriors, Kobs needed to get one and close in at the top. James Ijongat sold a dummy to break the Rhinos defence line and ground the ball for Kobs' second try.

Rhinos barely presented a challenge going forward and it was Kobs asking all the questions as they pushed for a third try to land a bonus point. Second half substitutes Timothy Mudoola and Allan Musoke combined for the bonus point try with the latter touching down in the corner.

The win was enough for Kobs to close in on log leaders Heathens, just one point off the pace at the end of the first round. In the other games played, Heathens defeated Warriors 20-09 while Pirates beat Rams 66-00.

Jinja Hippos got their second successive win at Dam Waters with a 19-16 victory over Toyota Buffaloes.  Plascon Mongers beat Walukuba Barbarians 51-10 in Entebbe.
