Betway doors still open despite partial lockdown

Many sectors of life in Uganda are underdoing partial lockdown for fear of the coronavirus after a directive by President Yoweri Museveni this week.

The 32-day ban of public gatherings means a number of areas are affected including entertainment and sports hangouts.

The gaming industry has not been spared too. “Gaming premises are identified as places of entertainment that attract mass gatherings,” read part of the statement to the gaming industry by National Lotteries & Gaming Regulatory Board Acting CEO Julie Namuli.

“We have been further advised by the Board to ensure that all gaming premises are temporarily closed for a period of 32 days as communicated in the State of the Nation address.”

However, Rangers Limited who hold the Betway brand still have doors open to punters during this Covid-19 lockdown.

“All shops countrywide to close for 32 days,” said Betway country manager Adellah Nyaruhuma Agaba in reaction to the letter.

It means that Betway’s shops at Market Plaza in Kampala and the other two in Mbarara and Soroti will not operate.

However, punters still have access to place bets on the available football matches as well as now, the buzzing casino games via www.betway.ug.

“We are an online company,” said Mrs Nyaruhuma, “There are leagues that are still running and a lot of options to bet on available on our site,” she added.

Betway is the leading player in the gaming industry with its sponsorships coined to Express Football Club in the Uganda Premier League, Power in the National Men’s Basketball League and the Kobs in the National Rugby League.
