Betway assets wait after government bans sports events

Uganda is one of the few African countries yet to register a case with the coronavirus pandemic but its government is not taking chances.

President Yoweri Museveni is keen on maintaining the status quo and he recently laid out strategies to curb the virus.

Part of this is that public gatherings including sports events will not take place for 32 days as Uganda enforces a partial lock-down, as many other countries have done.

It means that Express Football Club, sponsored by leading gaming company Betway, can’t kick a ball in the Uganda Premier League (UPL) any soon.

The UPL had taken a 45-day break prior for the national team - the Cranes - to prepare of the Chan finals.

But the latter continental championship earlier set for April 4-25 in Cameroon, has also been called off by football body Caf.

Like Express who lay ninth with 31 points from 25 matches on the 16-team log, another affected team is Betway Kobs in the National Rugby League which can also not take place.

Kobs are second on the log behind Heathens with 58 points after polling 12 wins from 13 matches.

Betway Power will too have to wait for action in the National Basketball League which was due to start this weekend in Kansanga.
