Shilla Omuriwe has named her first team as head coach of the Uganda Volleyball Cranes ahead of the African Volleyball Championship in Kigali, Rwanda next month.
A final team of 12 and an extra two players was confirmed on Monday with the team only left with a few days to fly out.
Omuriwe initially had 18 players to select from and has only dropped 4 ahead of the trip.
Setter Moses Odeke and receiver-attacker Ivan Ongom pulled out of the squad due to their commitments at work.
George Aporu will captain the team and will be assisted by Daudi Okello while Gideon Angiro, Brian Atuhaire and Emmanuel Okia will be the three debutants on the team.
“The 14 players have been selected after looking at their statistics and performance during the three weeks we have been in training,” Coach Omuriwe told the press after naming the team.
“The boys are ready to compete, we have made pretty more strides in the area of defence and I am confident that we have made some progress,” she added.
“We are heading to Rwanda to compete and I believe we can reach the final.”
Nathan Okare Edulu (OBB) and Jonathan Tumukunde (Nemostars) are the two players travelling with the team without being named in the final 12.
The team is set to leave for Kigali on Friday and will be subjected to a seven-day quarantine on arrival.
Hosts Rwanda, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Tanzania, Tunisia and Senegal are some of the other teams expected to grace the championship.
