Express start CECAFA with victory

CECAFA KAGAME CUP: Express 1-0 Atlabara

Express FC opened their CECAFA Kagame Cup with a 1-0 win over South Sudanese outfit Atlabara FC Monday afternoon.

Eric Kambale continued with his form from the domestic league and got the only goal of the match at the Azam Complex Chamazi in Dar el Salam, Tanzania.

The Uganda Premier League champions took the lead from the spot after Kambale was fouled in the box and converted the resultant penalty.

Wasswa Bbosa's charges went into the halftime break with the lead and had to endure most of the second half with 10 men after midfielder Abel Eturude was given marching orders.

The red card came in the 66th minute with Etrude adjudged to have elbowed Ernadez Tera. The Red Eagles held on for a much needed perfect start to the tournament.

"It's very important that we won the game," Bbosa said at the end of the game. "Our fitness levels are a bit low because the players had been on a break before we came for the tournament," he added.

Express next face Nyasa Big Bullets at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Wednesday. The other Ugandan side in the tournament, KCCA FC, started on a wrong note as they stumbled to lose 2-0 to Azam.

The Tanzanian outfit avenged their loss in 2019 final in Kigali, Rwanda.
