Atletico Madrid will look for a fast start to the 2019/20 La Liga season when they host Getafe at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday 18 August, kick-off at 22:00.
Atletico finished as runners-up in the 2018/19 season, but were a full 11 points adrift of champions Barcelona. This term, manager Diego Simeone is hoping for a more sustained title challenge from his charges.
The Rojiblancos have been exceptionally busy in the transfer market this European summer, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Filipe Luis, Lucas Hernandez and Diego Godin leaving the club.
However, they have also recruited ambitiously, signing promising attacker Joao Felix from Benfica for huge money, while also bringing in the likes of Kieran Trippier, Hermoso, Sime Vrsaljko and Marcos Llorente.
Atletico’s pre-season form was impressive, particularly a 7-3 mauling of Real Madrid last month, but Simeone will know that translating that to competitive football will not necessarily be easy, with this game against Getafe as their first true test.
Getafe, meanwhile, will be looking to build on last season’s fifth place finish. They will again look to Jaime Mata and veteran Jorge Molina to inspire their attack – the pair scored a combined 28 La Liga goals last term. Support your favourites with the best
