Ainsworth hails perfect fit Ikpeazu after Wycombe union

Gareth Ainsworth has been at English Championship side Wyxombe Wanderers for more than eight years, giving him in-depth knowledge of not only the club but the community at large.

Few people will therefore doubt his judgment after describing Uganda Cranes striker Uche Ikpeazu Mubiru as the ideal signing as the club seek to make an impression after reaching the second tier of English football for the first time in the club's 133 year history.

"We feel he’s perfectly suited for the way we play and being part of this squad will get the best out of him,” Ainsworth stated after signing the 6ft 3 forward on a free transfer before adding.

“He’s quick, strong, holds the ball up well and will score goals for us too. He gives us another option up front and no doubt will learn a lot from Adebayo Akinfenwa who has done a phenomenal job for us in a similar role over the past four years.”

Uche is a player I’ve always admired, going right back to the start of his career with Reading and Watford’s under-23 sides.”

“And I’m delighted that the time has come for us to bring him to Wycombe Wanderers,” added Ainsworth after landing the player, born to a Ugandan mother and Nigerian father.

After his struggles at Scottish side Hearts last season, Ikpeazu was equally delighted with the switch back to England where he grew up.

“I’m absolutely buzzing. I’ve known the gaffer for a few years now and to finally get to work with him is amazing,” stated Ikpeazu
“One of my goals was to play in the championship at 25. I’ve achieved that now it’s time to work hard.”

“I like to hold up the ball, bring my teammates into play, give them confidence, get them up the pitch and occupy the centre halves and essentially put the ball in the back of the net.”

He was called up to the Cranes for the first time in March before the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

Ikpeazu netted 10 goals for Hearts in 55 appearances at Tynecastle but scored only twice before ending his two year stay in Scotland.
