Africa's best EPL players in last 10 years

Many great African players have graced the English Premier League in the last 10 years.

We take a look at the top 10 African players in the last decade.

John Obi Mikel

The former Nigeria captain enjoyed some success with Chelsea in the last 10 years winning two Premier League titles before leaving the club in 2017.

Mikel featured against Watford on Boxing Day 2015 to become the 21st player to make 350 appearances for the five-time Premier League champions. He left Chelsea having played 372 games and scored six goals.

Yaya Toure

The legendary Ivorian midfielder inspired Manchester City to three Premier League titles during his eight-year spell with the Citizens.

Renowned for his ability to play short and long precise through-balls, Toure completed more passes than any other player throughout the 2013/14 Premier League season, with 1,169 successful passes in total.

Mohamed Salah

The Egyptian superstar holds the record for most goals (32) in a 38-game season which he achieved during the 2017/18 campaign.

Salah is the first player in history to be named the Premier League’s Player of the Month three times in a single season, winning the accolade during the 2017/18 campaign in November, February, and March.

“Premier League Golden Boot, for sure,” Salah said when asked what his favourite prize was on Goal in 2018.

“I had to work hard for that, and concentrate on every match to score. Also I had to fight for it with great players such as Harry Kane and Kun Aguero.”

Riyad Mahrez

The Algeria captain is one of the best wingers in the Premier League having won the competition twice with Leicester City and Manchester City in the last decade.

In May 2019, Mahrez helped City win the FA Cup and became the first African player to complete an English domestic treble, as he earlier won the EFL Cup and the Premier League in the 2018/19 season.

Didier Drogba

The retired Ivorian striker is one of the best players ever to play in the Premier League having won the title twice since 2010 and he is Africa's all-time top goalscorer in competition with 104 goals.

He is currently placed fourth on Chelsea' s all-time top goalscorer list with 164 goals across all competitions.

“We won it in the best way possible. It’s one of the best ways to celebrate and cheer with our fans,” said Drogba on Talk Sport after winning his second title in 2015.

“It’s a sad day but at the same time one of the best days in Chelsea’s history. We have had fun all year and even in the difficult moments we have stuck together – that’s what made us champions.”

Emmanuel Adebayor

The Togo captain had a successful career in the Premier League having scored 97 goals for Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

Adebayor is one of the top scorers in North London derbies (featuring Arsenal and Tottenham) having netted 10 goals in this fixture, a record which he shares with Bobby Smith and Harry Kane.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Gabon captain has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League having won last season's Golden Boot award.

Between February and October 2018, Aubameyang tallied 16 goals in Premier League play which gave him a minutes per goal ratio of 104.6 - this set the record for the best minutes per goal ratio in Premier League history (minimum 10 goals) according to Opta statistics.

Kolo Toure

The retired Ivorian defender helped Manchester City clinch the 2011/12 Premier League title and went on to play for British giants Liverpool FC.

Toure came very close to becoming the first player to win the Premier League title with three different clubs when he helped Liverpool finish second behind his former side City, who won the coveted trophy by only two points during the 2013/14 season.

Sadio Mane

The Senegal vice-captain is widely considered to be the best player in the world at the moment having won last season's Premier League Golden Boot award which he shared with Aubameyang and Salah.

Mane holds the record for the fastest hat-trick in the history of the Premier League having scored three times in 2 minutes 56 seconds for Southampton in a 6–1 win over Aston Villa in May 2015.
