Group G-L Preview

Groups G through L of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification tournament will see their matchday three fixtures played from Wednesday 10 to Saturday 13 October, with heavyweights such as Ivory Coast, Egypt and Tunisia in action.

The round opens with a Group K match in Ndola on Wednesday as Zambia – who have failed to win a game this far – host top-of-the-table Guinea-Bissau. A win for Chipolopolo would throw the pool – which also sees Mozambique play host to Namibia in Maputo on Saturday – wide open.

With a grand prize of a flat screen TV and home theatre system, weekly giveaways, and thousands of daily prizes to be won, it’s time for the 30,000 in 30 Days promotion

Thursday’s only game sees Congo and Liberia battling for their first win in Group G, while Friday’s action opens with an early-evening kick-off between Angola and surprise Group I leaders Mauritania in Luanda.

The two big names to feature on Friday night are the Ivory Coast and Egypt. The former will chase a second successive win when they host Central African Republic in a Group H clash (with the likes of Maxwel Cornet and Franck Kessie leading an exciting new generation of Elephants players), while the latter will once again look to Mohamed Salah for inspiration as they host Group J rivals Swaziland in Cairo.

The Liverpool man scored twice (despite missing two penalties) in Egypt’s 6-0 win over Niger last month and the Pharaohs’ coach Javier Aguirre insists Salah’s lack of stellar form at club level is nothing to be concerned with.

“It’s not easy, this is just beginning. Goal scorers like Salah, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, and [Lionel] Messi go through streaks, suddenly they are scoring three goals a game, or they can go three or four games without scoring a single goal,” said the Mexican tactician.

The other Group J match sees leaders Tunisia chasing a hat-trick of wins when they host Niger in the final game on Saturday night, but the day opens with Uganda looking to consolidate top spot in Group L when they play at home to second-placed Lesotho in Kira.

"We are still leading the group, we need to win our next game and I have the belief that we will do so. Back-to-back wins against Lesotho should give us qualification and that is what we need to do because we don't want to go into the last two games fighting for points," said Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Saturday also sees two very tough away games for Southern African sides Zimbabwe and Botswana. The former head to Kinshasa for a top-of-the-table battle with DR Congo in Group G, while the latter are looking for their first points in Group I as they tackle Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou.
