Could a new champion be crowned when the 2021 edition of the WGC-Mexico / WGC-Workday Championship is held at The Concession Golf Course in Bradenton, Florida from 25 to 28 February?

Originally scheduled for Mexico, this tournament has been moved and re-branded for 2021 due to logistical difficulties created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

American Patrick Reed is the defending champion after his one-stroke victory ahead of Bryson DeChambeau last year, but the 30-year-old comes into this event under something of a cloud after a recent controversy involving an ‘embedded’ ball at the Farmers Insurance Open – a tournament he won by five strokes.

“The protocols and everything I went through was the right thing,” said Reed in the wake of the incident. “I did everything I was supposed to do and that was confirmed by the rules officials.”

Another who comes into the WGC tournament off the back of trouble is Rory McIlroy, with the Northern Irishman failing to make the cut at this past weekend’s Genesis Invitational – his first missed cut since the 2019 Open Championship.

"It's tricky," said McIlroy after his Genesis Invitational showing. "The wind was up a touch, greens were getting a little firm. I think it was one of those days where it's just as easy to shoot two or three-under as it is to shoot two or three-over.”

No such troubles for world number one Dustin Johnson, whose game is in fine fettle – though he admits he is always looking for improvement.

“I feel like I could always be better with every part of the game, but definitely can roll the putter better always,” said Johnson. “I feel like the short game, you can always improve with that, too. But I feel like I’m swinging it pretty good, I’m happy with the way I’m swinging it, but there’s room for improvement I think throughout the bag.”
