Betway Power remain the team to beat in this season’s National
Basketball League after the five-time champions made it five consecutive victories by overcoming tricky opposition in Pemba Warriors and KCCA over the weekend.
The two results, coupled with KIU Titans’ surprise defeat to Sharing Youth left them as the only unbeaten men’s side thus far.
First they had to fend off old rivals Pemba Warriors’ challenge 82-78 on Friday before easily dispatching newcomers KCCA on Sunday.
Much of their good early season form has been attributed to the club’s new recruits settling in smoothly.
“Power’s inside game is solid with the players they brought in,” Warriors coach Ronnie Mutebi had admitted before the game that pitted two of the most supported teams in the domestic league.
His prediction proved accurate as Geoffrey Soro and Phillip Ameny led with 19 and 17 points respectively in the game, to underline their importance.
The two teams exchanged leads several times in the game before Power pulled away with a late 9-5 run.
On Sunday, another new recruit in former UCU shooting guard Stephen Wundi scored a game high 14 points as Power who have emerged as early frontrunners to challenge City Oilers breezed past KCCA 89-60.
This was after Sharing Youth surprised KIU, last season’s playoff finalists and who are expected to challenge again 47-46 on Saturday evening.
The Kansanga-based side however recovered on Sunday with UPDF suffering the backlash in a 100-57 result that saw Chris Omanye score a season high 27 points and Collins Kasujja 21 to improve to 4-1.
The record is shared by champions City Oilers who have since recovered from the opening day loss to Betway Power with four straight victories.
Pemba Warriors were the latest causalities going down 58-51 in a close contest that was decided by a 10-1 run in the fourth quarter.
Landry Ndikumana and Jimmy Enabu combined for 23 points to upstage Saidi Amisi’s game high 15 for the Warriors who dropped to 2-3 this season.
