McKinstry happy with draw in CHAN opener

Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry will take the one point off neighbours Rwanda and move on.

The Cranes were held to a goalless draw in their opening match of the 2021 CHAN tournament by an unrelenting Rwanda side.

“We are satisfied with the result," McKinstry said in an interview with Cafonline.com after the match.

"We came out of this match with regrets. It is up to us to question ourselves and above all to be conquerors,” he added.

Uganda struggled to stamp their authority on the game and were occasionally asked questions by the opponents.

Winger Joachim Ojera had the game's first chance inside the first two minutes but failed to get a good connection with his head from a Karim Watambala free-kick.

That turned out to be one of the rare occurrences on the night as the team struggled to create clear cut chances.

“Congratulate Rwanda , they were tough opponents. The first half was a little bit frustrating and maybe it was because for a lot of players it was a first time at this level,” McKinstry opined.

”There was a little bit of nervousness but they grew into the game during the second period. We hope to build on that coming into our second game.”

Uganda face debutants Togo in their second match on Friday in what has turned out to be a Must win game for the CECAFA side.

Togo lost their opening game of the tournament to holders Morocco and will be looking to stay alive.

Uganda's final group game against Morocco was considered the toughest challenge in the group before a ball was kicked in Cameroon.

Appearing at the CHAN tournament for a fifth time in a row, the Cranes will be looking to find their way out of the group to the knockout stages, something that has not happened in the last four attempts.
