In more established sporting nations, there is a strong culture of sports teams giving back to the less disadvantaged communities over the festive period.
Despite the obvious differences in terms of earnings when compared to those first world countries, the trend is also gaining popularity in Uganda. Over the weekend five-time national Basketball League champions Betway Power with the backing of Betway, showed it is one of few sports teams to make such a gesture.
This is after the team made the 275km road trip to the northern part of Uganda in Gulu where they gave out an assortment of items including food to the juvenile rehabilitation centre and Gulu referral children's home.
The team led by club chairman Patrick “Ofwono” Obalim and coach Arnold Lando also chatted to the youngsters and their families, posed for photos, signed autographs and handed out Christmas gifts to the children.
They also paid a courtesy visit to the Acholi Kingdom before winding up the trip with an exhibition game against Gulu Hawks that Betway Power won 46-44.
This included a number of fan activation games where winners got cash prizes and Betway-branded T-shirts. This was the last activity for the club who made the playoff semifinals before falling to City Oilers. The 2018 National Basketball League season is expected to commence in March
