The English Premier League has been graced with some of the greatest goalscorers on the planet over the past 28 years

We take a look at the top five scorers in the history of the competition:

Frank Lampard

Matches: 609
Goals: 177

The retired English midfield maestro was one of the best attacking midfielders in the world during his days with Chelsea in the Premier League.

Lampard is the fifth-highest goalscorer in the league's history with 177 goals, having scored most of them during his 13-year spell with Chelsea (147 club record).

The current Chelsea manager is one of nine players and the only midfielder to have scored 150 or more goals in the Premier League.

He also played for West Ham United (24) and Manchester City (6).

Sergio Aguero

Matches: 261
Goals: 180

The Argentine hitman is widely considered as one of the best players of his generation and one of the best centre-forwards in Premier League history.

Aguero is currently the fourth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history, and the highest non-English scorer in the history of the competition, with 180 goals in the division.

He also holds the record for most hat-tricks in the Premier League with twelve. He has achieved all these records while playing for one club, Manchester City.

"Aguero is now coming up to his 32nd birthday and he's still banging in the goals left, right and centre," Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer said about Aguero on Daily Mail.

"I know he's playing in a magnificent team but 180-odd goals, 260 appearances and look what he's won also. I love both of them, Thierry was different. The role now as a forward has slightly changed.

"There's not so many centre-forwards now, it's a forward but the one constant is you have to score goals and both of them are not only great goalscorers but scorers of great goals.'

Andy Cole

Matches: 414
Goals: 187

The retired English striker was a journeyman, but he is most notably remembered for his time with Manchester United, where he spent six years of his career.

Cole is the third-highest goalscorer in Premier League history with 187 goals having scored most of them during his spell with United (93).

He also turned out for Newcastle United (43), Blackburn Rovers (27), Fulham (12), Manchester City (9) and Portsmouth (3) in the division.

Wayne Rooney

Matches: 494
Goals: 208

The English marksman is considered to be one of the best players of his generation and is the record goalscorer for both the England national team and Manchester United.

Rooney's 208 goals make him the Premier League's second top scorer of all-time having played for Everton (25) and United (183) in the division.

His 183 goals at United being the most scored by a player for any single club.

He is currently on the books of English side Derby County.

"I still felt I could do it when I was at Everton, but other people made their decisions on that," said the 34-year-old on Goal.

"Now my ambition is to get Derby back in the Premier League and hopefully play my part there for them. Ryan Giggs was able to play into his late thirties in the Premier League and Gareth Barry says he wants to do it at 40.

"Given the right team around me, then I could still play in the Premier League."

Alan Shearer

Matches: 441
Goals: 260

The legendary English marksman is widely considered to be the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Premier League.

Shearer scored a record 260 in the Premier League (11 hat-tricks) during his stays with Blackburn Rovers (112) and Newcastle United (148 club record).

The Newcastle-born legend became the first player to score 100 Premier League goals in 1996, and holds the record for the fewest games taken to reach 100, doing so in 124 appearances.
