WBA Welterweight Championship
Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner
Sunday, 20 January 2019
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, United States
Defending his World Boxing Association Welterweight title will be the only thing on Manny Pacquiao’s mind when he battles Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States on Sunday 20 January 2019.
After retiring in 2016, many doubted Pacquiao’s ability to compete at the highest level when he decided to compete again – especially after suffering a controversial defeat in Australia to Jeff Horn in July 2017.
However, a victory via TKO over Lucas Martin Matthysse in Kuala Lumpur last year saw ‘Pac Man’ return to peak form and demonstrate that he remains one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
American Adrien Broner, 29, is the man challenging Pacquiao for his belt. Broner was once touted as the heir to Floyd Mayweather’s throne but is looking to shrug off a reputation of being a career underachiever.
His three career defeats have come against current or former world champions in Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia.
If he can finally defeat a world champ in the shape of Pacquiao, it would be considered a major breakthrough for the Cincinnati man and possibly catapult him back into true world title contention.
