The NBA’s Unfortunate Trades

Trading for players in sports is a multimillion dollar industry that can drastically change how a team performs. In sporting history there have been many great trades that turned losing teams into league-winning teams. There have, however, also been terrible trades, trades that effect franchises for years and derail careers.

With the NBA playoffs 2018 in a full swing, we have a look at just a few of the NBA basketball’s most unfortunate trades:

Vince Carter and the Golden State Warriors

Vince Carter was with Golden State for just minutes after being drafted. The small forward would quickly be traded to the Toronto Raptors for Antwan Jamison. It wasn’t a one for one trade either. Golden State forked over cash along with Carter for the trade. Carter developed into a topflight player almost immediately, winning Rookie of the Year with the Raptors. Jamison, on the other hand, failed to impress and Golden State languished.

James Harden and Oklahoma City Thunder

During the 2009 draft, James Harden was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the third round. Although Harden performed well as a high-volume scoring sixth man for Oklahoma for three seasons, many thought that he never fully realised his potential.

Prior to the 2012-13 season, Oklahoma traded Harden to the Houston Rockets receiving draft picks (which they used on Steven Adams and Mitch McGary), Keven Martin and Jeremy Lamb. On the surface, a seemingly great result for Oklahoma. However, Harden, flourished with the Rockets averaging 27.9 points and 7.7 assists and becoming one of the NBA’s best.

Dennis Rodman and the San Antonio Spurs

At 34, many believed Dennis Rodman’s best years were behind him including the San Antonio Spurs. Rodman had been difficult to deal with and San Antonio were eager to get the aging legend off their roster. Up North, the Chicago Bulls had just lost Horace Grant to the Orlando Magic and were desperate for a strong rebounding presence. San Antonio were happy to trade for Rodman receiving Will Perdue in exchange.

Rodman proved his most vocal critics wrong. He would lead the NBA in rebounds per game for much of the next three season acting as a catalyst for the Bulls who would win three championships with Rodman. At San Antonio Perdue was never more than a backup center.
