Seguya concentrating on Gold Cup not Elgon Cup

A couple of years ago, the annual Elgon Cup tie between Uganda and Kenya was granted test status.

That, however, has never moved Uganda Rugby Cranes coach Robert Seguya to put a lot of emphasis on the match up.

And that will not change this year when the two sides meet prior to the busy schedule in the Rugby Africa Gold Cup.

"I don't plan for Elgon Cup," Seguya said when asked about the team's readiness ahead of the clash with the Kenya Simbas.

"The focus is on the Gold Cup and trying to make it to the world cup," he added.

The Cranes will square off with the Simbas on May 26 in Kampala and the return leg on July 7 will double as Uganda's second game in the Gold Cup.

With the National Sevens Team preparing for their maiden appearance at the Rugby Sevens World Cup, a number of names will be expected to miss Uganda's first games of the competition.

Uganda will start their Gold Cup campaign away in Namibia on June 16 before visiting Nairobi on July 7 for a clash with the Simbas.

The Rugby Sevens World Cup will be on the weekend of July 20-22 in San Francisco.

Meanwhile the Uganda Rugby Cranes’ trial matches against South African side Cheetahs have been postponed until after the Elgon Cup.

The clashes earlier scheduled for May 16 and 19 will now happen on May 30 and June 2.

This will allow the coaching staff assess the team after the Elgon Cup clash with Kenya.

The trial games are supposed to give players a chance to push for places in the final 35-man squad that will take Uganda through the international season.

Rugby Cranes

The Rugby Cranes already tested themselves in two trial games against the South African Barbarians last month.

Having played the South African Barbarians in two Tests at Legends Rugby Club, the Cranes were expected to play two more friendlies before hosting Kenya.

With a number of players out of contention in the international season, players will be expected to fight for slots on the final team to feature for Uganda in the Africa Gold Cup.
