KAMPALA. With no rewards for winning, few hold the National Basketball League regular season in high regard.

Topping the standings however often offers a relatively easier route to the latter part of the playoff season.

That should be Betway Power’s ambition as they tip off the second round of the regular season against KIU this evening at the Lugogo MTN Arena.

They raised expectations of ending a seven year league drought after topping the first round standings with a 10-1 record only blemished by the 63-52 reverse to Ndejje University.

Those expectations have at times been matched by some good performances as evidenced with their passing and ball movement in the 82-60 rout of JKL in their final first round game.

Stephen Wundi has hit the ground running since joining from UCU and is averaging a team high 11 points.

Phillip Ameny and Geoffrey Soro have also given themselves more front court presence with the former averaging 7-4 points and eight rebounds per-game to raise expectation for the season.

They will be up against a KIU Titans side which at 8-2 could meanwhile also have had the next best record had their game also against the university side not been postponed.

Power got the better of KIU when the pair faced off in the first round winning 65-56 to keep in line with their fast start.

KIU on the other hand had less work to do in the off season with emphasis on gelling of the team whose roster was trimmed under guidance of head coach Brian Wathum.

Guard Chris Omanye is averaging 12 points per game for the Kansanga based outfit who also reached their maiden playoff final last season.

After Friday’s game, Power will have little rest with a game against Our Saviour crowning the weekend action on Sunday evening.

The latter finished the first round fifth on the standings with a decent 6-5 return but were subjected to a 71-36 hiding in the first round.  Reigning champions City Oilers meanwhile start the second round against JKL on Saturday.
