UEFA Super Cup 2018
Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid
Wednesday, August 15th
Lillekula Stadium, Estonia
Kick-off at 20:00 (8pm) GMT
Following Barcelona’s victory over Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup on Saturday, the
UEFA Super Cup will see another all Spanish affair as Real Madrid – winners of the UEFA Champions League for a third successive season in 2017/18 – will take on the UEFA Europa League champions and cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid.
Los Blancos will begin a competitive campaign without the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time in nine years after the Portuguese forward joined Italian giants Juventus. While replacing a player like Ronaldo is almost impossible, fans will be slightly frustrated at new manager Julen Lopetegui’s and President Florentino Perez’ lacklustre attempts at doing just that.
So far, only right back Alvaro Odriozola and Brazilian starlet Rodrygo, who will only join the club in January when he turns 18, are the only outfield players signed by the capital club so far in this window, while Vinicius Junior, signed from Flamengo last season has also now linked up with his new teammates. Goalkeeper Thibault Curtois who joined from Chelsea for a reported 35-million pounds is expected make his debut between the sticks in the derby on Wednesday.
Diego Simeone has overseen a stuttering pre-season with a solitary penalty shootout victory over Arsenal to show for the efforts before defeats against PSG and Inter respectively. He has also had to contend with the departures of the striking duo of Fernando Torres and Kevin Gameiro although retaining the services of his newly crowned world champion Antoine Griezmann boasts arguably his best piece of business.
Los Rojiblancos have brought in no less than seven signings including Thomas Lemar from Monaco who, like Griezmann was part of France’s World Cup winning squad. Another notable addition is that of Croatian striker Nikola Kalinic who also hit the headlines at this summer’s tournament in Russia for his antics off the field as he was subsequently sent home. He joins Santiago Arias (PSV) and Gelson Martins (Sporting Lisbon) among other new names at Atletico worth a mention.
