Could Cristiano Ronaldo Return Serie A to its Former Glory?

Before the billionaire spending sprees in Spain and England, Italy’s Serie A ruled European club football. Through the 80s and 90s, Serie A teams signed international giants like Dutchmen Ruud Gullit and Dennis Bergkamp, Paul Gascoigne and David Platt from England and Argentina's Diego Maradona. It was the league that everyone tuned into watch and every player wanted to compete in. However, with the rise of Spain’s La Liga and England’s Premier League in the early 2000s, support for the Serie A waned.

Enter Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the greatest football player in the world and certainly the most popular. The Portuguese striker commands a following of 136 million followers on Instagram, more than any other sports star in the world. In fact, it’s not even close. The NBA’s Lebron James comes in a very distant second with 39.5 million. Ronaldo’s popularity also translates into financial boosts for any brand or club he is even vaguely associated with. Within 24 hours of Juventus announcing the striker’s signing, the club sold $60 million worth of Ronaldo jerseys. It is, as a result, no exaggeration that Ronaldo could singlehandedly elevate Italy’s Serie A back to its former glory.

Speculation that an injection of talent could transform Serie A is not a new phenomenon though. Last year, AC Milan went on a summer spending spree that rivaled those of European giants like Manchester United and Barcelona. Club owners had hoped that the new talent would break Juventus’ staggering six-year stranglehold over the Italian league. Ultimately, the gamble would fail spectacularly. Not only would Juventus win their thirty-fourth league title, Milan would finish a disappointing sixth missing out on both the Champions League and Europa League.

Despite past failings though, it is not without merit to assume that Ronaldo could very well be the key to transforming Italy’s premier football league.
