The Blues head into Christmas in fifth spot on the league standings and having won their last two home games (3-1 vs Leeds United and 3-0 vs West Ham United), ahead of visits from Villa and Manchester City in quick succession.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard believes that his club's title challenge this season rests on their own shoulders as they prepare for a tough run of fixtures.

“It depends on us now. The league is so tough, we are seeing results every week which might surprise some," said Lampard.

“It is so hard for teams to sustain form and there are a culmination of things for that, so I don’t want to jump the gun. It is tough, we have Arsenal on Boxing Day, then Aston Villa and Man City in January so the onus is on us.”

Villa have won five of their last six away matches in the Premier League, a run which includes notable wins over Leicester City and Arsenal. The Birmingham club defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-0 in their most recent away fixture.

Chelsea completed the league 'double' over Villa last season. Goals from Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount guided the club to a 2-1 win in the corresponding fixture last season while they won by the same scoreline at Villa Park in June, for a sixth successive win in this rivalry.
