Betway Power seek to defy odds against rampant Oilers

National Basketball League

Betway Power’s National Basketball League playoff record against City Oilers does not make for good reading. The reigning champions, Oilers hold a 3-1 series lead as they seek to overtake Power and equal Falcons six championships as the most successful domestic basketball sides.

The Oilers also triumphed 3-0 when they met in last season’s playoff semi-finals to build on the 4-1 and 3-1 victories in 2016 and 2015.

The 2014 playoff final meanwhile saw Betway Power swept 4-0 while they also lost 3-1 in the 2013 playoff semi-finals.  And as the records suggest, Power have never claimed more than a game in those five meetings.

But despite the odds being stacked against his side Betway Power coach Arnold “Mchuda” Lando is confident his side can win when the two teams meet on Wednesday evening for game five at Lugogo.

“Our strategy has been to play a game at a time and I believe we can win game five,” Lando said ahead of the game. He also believes Power need to get back to their up-tempo fast game that delivered the 85-66 blowout victory in game one.

“We only had our transitional offense in the first game. I believe we shall win tomorrow’s game. We’ve analysed all our mistakes and we need to get back to what we did in game one,” he added of the game in which Joseph Ikong dropped 24 points.

But a lot has changed since then with City Oilers winning the subsequent three closely contested games. Ikong’s two turnovers in crunch time allowed the Oilers to hold onto a 78-71 game two victory that levelled the series before the Oilers won game three 77-68 and game four 83-72.

“They always keep a positive mind set which is very important,” noted Lando whose team last won the title in 2011.

In the ladies final reigning champions UCU Lady Canons will play JKL Lady Dolphins in game one having returned from the Zone V championship where they finished third.
